The Reflection

Coming up with the topic of healthcare inequality was, indeed, an accident. I was having a hard time finding a topic that is essential to write about. I was told, by my peers, to discuss about the coronavirus since it was the number one trending topic. I was scrolling on my Instagram feed, for leisure, and I came across the video from redfishstream. I do not follow that account, however, I have often come across videos or pictures that deals with problems in America; problems ranging from racism, colorism, poverty, gender inequality, and so forth. As I was watching the clip, I had mixed feelings about this, because politicians have once said that it was not a time to be selfish but they’re being selfish, as well. I had sensed hypocrisy and sooner than later, I felt inspired to effectively write this final essay. The video clip was very straightforward and I didn’t to worry too much about figuring out the speaker’s message; coming up with a thesis statement was a breeze. However, it was bringing secondary sources that was challenging for me since she didn’t quote anyone’s work. I prefer to analyze a video clip instead of an article is because I like to challenge myself and if I were to analyze an article, I would have a hard time comprehending the author’s overall message. In my mind, photos and videos’ themesare more understandable than writing.

At first, I did have trouble finding sources due to fact that I did not know exactly what parts I wanted to talk about. I wanted to talk about the coronavirus itself, but because it was a new infection and there’s not that much knowledge about, it was tricky finding a scholarly source. Until I had emailed you for assistance and you mentioned health care disparities in general, that is when the big picture was beginning to get clear. Now there were certain aspects I had wanted to unfold. Parts involving race and wealth, testing and accessibilities, the historical patterns and of course, the media deceiving. I wanted to make sure my paper had the proper flow since that is a part of my writing weakness. In the midst of conducting my research, I have found articles from the Washington Post and The Atlantic that helped me further write this paper. It was also easy finding scholarly sources involving health care differences since it was urgent to provide statistical reports there, backing up the speaker’s claim. The data was the biggest piece that held this essay together. My biggest issue was finding an article where the media and politicians would lie to the public. I came with a range of reporters writing about the use of fake news and reciting things that Donald Trump had said at press conferences, but in my head, that wasn’t something I was looking for in my research. So I had to find an article from the NY Governor office themselves and browse through Andrew Cuomo plans and propositions. I do remember that he kept constantly saying that COVID- 19 testing was essential and available. So I used his quote and was able to contradict what he was saying. I didn’t have to disregard any of my sources for another.

When it came to analyzation, I had to focus more on the readings from the secondary sources than the video itself. I had to make sure I knew what I was reading before analyzing; I had to be able to connect them with the video clip. I tried to make sure the amount evidence I have provided doesn’t entirely consume too much and my analysis would be too little; I wanted to even them out. I had no intentions of counter arguing the speaker’s claim, but to go further into her message with the sources. This topic and the paper itself was perplexing, yet, worth accomplishing.
